Department of Dermatology, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences

The Department of Dermatology at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Health Services was established with the mission of educating physicians and specialist healthcare professionals, advancing scientific knowledge, and promoting public health within the university's service area, as well as at the national and regional levels. Among the department's key activities are optimizing educational programs for medical students, interns, dermatology residents, and fellows, and enhancing public awareness of skin health through various media platforms.

To achieve these goals, the department is committed to the continuous development of its faculty members' knowledge and clinical skills by keeping them updated with the latest scientific advances and technologies. Other major objectives include improving the academic and clinical training of medical students, interns, and dermatology residents; conducting innovative research to develop improved treatments for patients; advancing scientific knowledge through applied research; and strengthening both the academic and technological infrastructure required for the diagnosis and treatment of dermatologic diseases. The department also seeks to facilitate the recruitment of international trainees from across the region, with particular emphasis on applicants from Islamic and Persian-speaking countries.

History

In 1966 (1345 SH), the Dermatology Clinic was established at the former Farahnaz Hospital, which was affiliated with the National University of Iran, under the leadership of Dr. Rahmatollah Samii.

In 1968 (1347 SH), following the opening of Jorjani Hospital, the dermatology clinic was relocated there, and a three-bed inpatient unit for dermatology patients was established within the hospital's Department of Internal Medicine.

In 1973 (1352 SH), with the expansion of the Faculty of Medicine and the inauguration of Loghman-od-Dowleh Adham Hospital (currently Loghman Hakim Hospital), the Department of Dermatology was officially established with 28 inpatient beds, an outpatient clinic, and three dermatology specialists. The department was chaired by Dr. Rahmatollah Samii, while Dr. Abdolmajid Mortazavi and Dr. Faezeh Ahmadi served as assistant professors.

In 1977 (1356 SH), the department received accreditation to establish a dermatology residency training program, and the first four dermatology residents were admitted.

In 1979 (1358 SH), a second dermatology department was established at Saadat Abad Hospital (now Shahid Modarres Hospital).

In 1988 (1367 SH), this department was transferred from Saadat Abad Hospital to Bu-Ali Hospital.

In 2004 (1383 SH), after Bu-Ali Hospital was transferred to the Islamic Azad University, the dermatology department was relocated to Shohada-e Tajrish Hospital, where it continues to provide clinical services, education, and research activities to this day.
